The kimono used for this canvas was made and used in the Taisho period (early 20th century).
Explanation and meaning of the pattern and colors
Since the Edo period (1603-1867), the straight flowing stripe pattern has been very popular as a fashionable pattern, especially among urban people. The "child stripe" pattern, in which stripes of different thicknesses are lined up, is one of the many stripe patterns, and consists of a thick stripe and a thin stripe side by side. The name comes from the fact that the thick stripes are lined up with the thin stripes like a parent and child.
Description of Fabric Characteristics
The stripe pattern is dyed by traditional print dyeing. The two colors of red and purple are a sign that the kimono was probably worn in everyday life as casual clothing. This type of kimono with repeated pattern is called "komon".
