Period/story

These canvases are upcycled from late Showa period (1980s) naga-juban (under kimono).

Explanation and Meaning of Pattern and Colors

The chrysanthemum pattern on the white canvas has a special meaning as a symbol of longevity. Its Japanese name, "mujina-giku," translates as "raccoon dog chrysanthemum. The name is derived from the chrysanthemum's appearance, with large overlapping petals resembling the fur of a mujina (raccoon dog). This pattern is very popular in various plant motif designs, and is commonly found in Edo komon (repeated painted patterns), katazome (traditional printed patterns), and jimon (woven patterns, like the one shown here).

Furthermore, the fact that this juban (under-kimono) has been preserved in its pure white, undyed state indicates that it was tailored and used for formal occasions. Its pristine white color allows the silk to shimmer beautifully when exposed to light, accentuating the distinctive woven patterns.

The combination of white, red and black is typical for weddings in Japan - traditionally the bride changes three times - in white, red and black furisode.

Description of fabric features

The naga-juban used under the kimono is made of rinzu silk (satin silk) on a white canvas. Rinzu satin is known for being thinner than crepe silk and has a lustrous, soft, and smooth texture. The chrysanthemum pattern on this white canvas, as well as the floral pattern on the red canvas, are meticulously hand-woven, highlighting the craftsmanship involved in creating these intricate designs.

Decoration Tips

The canvas can be displayed on a table, wall, etc. You will need tacks or nails to hang it on the wall. Because it is lightweight, you can hang it with two ordinary thumbtacks. You can also place it on an easel. Perfect for redecorating your room, as a housewarming gift, as a gift or as a souvenir for your loved ones! The product is carefully packaged and shipped so it can be used as a gift on the go.

Caution

All pieces are made from real kimonos, antiques and vintage pieces. For this reason, the fabric may have traces of long-term use and minor fabric damage. If there are scratches or stains, we always add a photo of the area on the item page, so please check before you buy.
