Period/story

Explanation and meaning of the pattern and colors
The decorations on the ocean wave pattern resemble peacock feathers, giving this unique pattern an oriental feel.
The ocean waves are considered an auspicious motif, with endless waves symbolizing the desire for everlasting happiness and a peaceful life for those who possess it.
Fabric Features Description
This piece features a decorative ocean wave pattern known as "Seigaiha", created by a weaving technique called "jimon". In this technique, the pattern is created not by color, but by the way light reflects off the threads at different angles.
In kimono culture, the lining that protrudes from the sleeves and bottom is known as "hakkake". It provides a unique way to appreciate color and pattern. Sometimes these rarely seen parts, visible only when the wind blows or when walking, turn out to be the most beautiful parts of the entire kimono. This embodies the concept of "uramasari", a tradition of being "secretly great". This canvas is an upcycled version of the hakkake - the kimono lining.
While plain fabrics have become common for hakkake in recent years, this one uses a fabric with a woven pattern, highlighting the meticulous attention to detail of the person who originally made it.
